BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – On Friday afternoon the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs took on the Toledo Rockets in their long awaited home opener at Brinkley Stadium. It was the first home game in 383 days for Gardner-Webb, who lost the match, 4-3, Toledo.
Toledo took a lead early in the second inning, as Eckman hit an RBI single for the Rockets allowing Moore to score the first run of the game.
The Runnin' Bulldogs answered back in the bottom of the third inning.
Lauren Adam singled, and advanced to second on an error by the Rocket's short stop, and
Weslyn Almond was walked to first base. With Adam and Almond on first and third base,
Trinity Sterrett smacked a single which allowed the two runners to score. Making it 2-1, Gardner-Webb.
In the fifth inning, The Rockets managed to score three more runs off of
Andrea Lyon. Putting the Runnin' Bulldogs down by half.
In effort to try and regain the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning,
McKenzie Lawrence scored the third run of the night for Gardner-Webb with two outs on the board. All while Sterrett was able to reach first base on an error by Denner from the Rockets. Unfortunately, GWU was not able to build off of that momentum late in the game as
Tristen Horrell hit the ball right back in to the glove of Toledo's Hunt to end the matchup.
Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action tomorrow, March 13
th , as the Runnin' Bulldog's take on Toledo at 1:00 PM, and Saint Francis at 3:00PM.
