COLUMBIA, S.C. – Gardner-Webb Softball dropped both games of its doubleheader at Beckham Field on Tuesday, losing 12-4 and 8-0, South Carolina.
GAME ONE: South Carolina 12, Gardner-Webb 4
Brooke Perry (0-4) took a loss in the circle for Gardner-Webb. Pitching just two innings, South Carolina was able to gather six hits and eight runs off of Perry, who faced a total of 18 batters in the first game.
Reah Barger came in as a relief pitcher for two innings, only letting up three hits and four runs to the Gamecock's.
In the game the Runnin' Bulldogs managed to gather four total hits in the first matchup.
Meredith Ferguson led GWU by going 2-for-3, followed by
Andrea Lyon (1-for-2), and
Ramsey Schlafer (1-for-3) each collecting one hit apiece.
Gardner-Webb scored four runs over the ranked (#24) South Carolina Team. As the Dog's opened the scoring early during their at-bat in the first inning.
Katie Mitchell scored on a wild pitch, and
Andrea Lyon scored off of an RBI single from
Meredith Ferguson.
Later on in the fourth inning, GWU scored their following two runs of the game. As
Meredith Ferguson batted in an RBI single allowing Mackenzie Lawrence to cross home plate, and
Riley McCurry was able to score on a wild pitch.
The Gamecock's managed to get nine total hits off of the Gardner-Webb Bullpen, and Kenzi Maguire paced the South Carolina squad by going 3-for-4 behind home plate.
GAME TWO: South Carolina 8, Gardner-Webb 0
Laken Myers (1-3) took the loss in the second game for the Runnin' Bulldogs. In the 3.1 innings that Myers pitched, four hits and seven runs were allowed in 21 batters faced, while also pitching four stikeouts.
In a game that was silent for Gardner-Webb, South Carolina scored a total of eight runs by the fifth inning, ending the game on a mercy rule.
Leading the Gamecocks Kassidy Krupit went 2-for-3 and accounted for four RBI's. While Aaliyah White, Katie Prebble, and Kylee Gleason each had one hit from behind the plate.
This weekend Gardner-Webb returns home and will start conference play in a three-game series against Big South opponent Longwood. Saturday's double header will start at 1:00 PM.
