BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb was defeated on both sides of doubleheader action Saturday at Brinkley Stadium, losing 11-0 and 7-2 to Longwood.
GAME ONE: Longwood 11, Gardner-Webb 0
For the Lancers from the circle, Sydney Backstrom earned the shutout while notching their eighth win of the season. Pitching a total of five innings, Backstrom only allowed a pair of hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts.
The Runnin' Bulldogs that accounted for the two hits were
Brooke Perry and
Leslie McNeil. Perry's hit came during her at bat in the bottom of the second inning, and went 1-for-1 at the plate. While McNeil's hit happened in the bottom of the fifth inning, going 1-for-2 in the game.
Taking the loss for Gardner-Webb,
Brooke Perry (0-5) allowed seven hits, nine runs, and six strikeouts from 26 batters that she faced.
Longwood collected eight total hits in the game, led by DH Madison Blair, who went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
GAME TWO: Longwood 7, Gardner-Webb 2
Taking an early lead, Longwood scored four runs in the first inning off of
Tristen Horrell. Horrell allowed four hits and three runs in the five batter that she faced, she took the eventual loss for the Dog's as well.
Taking over in the circle for Horrell, Myers allowed six hits, four runs, and three walks, in six innings of work. On a more positive note, Myers did pitch six total strikeouts.
After a rocky pitching start for the Runnin' Bulldogs, during their first at bat,
Meredith Ferguson smacked a double RBI home run out of the park to close the gap. Making it a 4-2, Longwood game.
Shortly answering back for the Lancers in the second inning, Jacobsen hit a double RBI homer, putting up Longwood and making it a 6-2 game.
Action was silent until the sixth inning, where Longwood scored their seventh run of the night off of an RBI single by Carr allowing Taylor to score the Lancers final run of the day.
Longwood paced the second game with ten total hits, Jacobsen (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Green (2-for-3, RBI), and Taylor (2-for-2, RBI) each earning themselves a pair.
The Runnin' Bulldogs managed to leave eight runners stranded on the bases, while the Lancers only left half as many.
Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action at 2:00 PM tomorrow March 20
th, taking on the Lancers in the third and final game of the conference series.
