ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the second time this season Gardner-Webb Women's Soccer has ended a match in a tie game. As on Sunday afternoon, Head Coach
Mike Varga and his Runnin' Bulldog Soccer squad tied to Winthrop in double overtime.
"It's been a challenging week," said HC
Mike Varga. "We didn't play as well as we had hoped but we did play hard and got a point on the road."
In goal for Gardner-Webb,
Abby Atchley earned the shutout, logging 110 minutes and two saves.
"I give
Abby Atchley a lot of credit in her first career start coming up with a shutout," said Varga.
Atchley's biggest save of the night came in the 94
th minute, as she stopped the ball off of a shot from Bailey Fudala, keeping it a scoreless game.
Gardner-Webb paced Winthrop in shots, taking a total of 15 in the matchup. As the Runnin' Bulldogs in the backfield only allowed seven shots from the Eagles.
Jada Newton led GWU with five shots and
Aubrie Jackson took three. While
Abby Clark and
Anna Fish each had two apiece.
Gardner-Webb Women's Soccer will be back in action on Sunday, March 28, taking on Campbell at Greene-Harbison Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
