ROCK HILL, S.C. – On Wednesday evening Gardner-Webb Softball took on Winthrop in doubleheader conference action at Terry Field. The Runnin' Bulldogs split the doubleheader, dropping game one to Winthrop 9-0, and picking up a win in the nightcap 5-3, Gardner-Webb.
GAME ONE: Winthrop 9, Gardner-Webb 0
In the third inning during Winthrop's at-bat, the Eagles were able to put up four runs. Coming from a one RBI home run by Kaitlyn Tucker, and two singles from Madyson Watson and Ansley Gilreath. Which would eventually end game one in a scoreless match for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Pitching a no hitter against Gardner-Webb, Madyson Watson took the win for the Eagles. Watson threw a total of seven strikeouts and only allowed one walk.
Watson's lone walk that she gave up was to
Andrea Lyon. Who was left stranded in the first inning as
Meredith Ferguson struck out at the plate for the third out.
Brooke Perry took the loss from the circle, working just one inning she allowed three hits and four runs on the eight batters she faced. Giving the Winthrop Eagles the lead to an eventual win.
Winthrop collected nine hits in the game, their leadoff batter Macy McCall and Kaitlyn Tucker each led with a pair. The eagles also took advantage of six walks from the Gardner-Webb bullpen.
GAME TWO: Gardner-Webb 5, Winthrop 3
In a scoreless game, Gardner-Webb took the lead during their at-bat in the top of the fifth inning. As
Andrea Lyon hit a homerun outside of the left field fence, allowing Trinty Sterrett and
Weslyn Almond to cross home plate. Putting the Dogs' ahead by three.
Winthrop answered during their at-bat in the bottom of the sixth frame, scoring three runs on an error and a wild pitch to make it a tie game. Which then sent the game into extra innings.
With the game tied in the eighth inning of action, Perry reached on a single, and
Tristen Horrell hit a homerun over the right center field fence to eventually seal the win for Gardner-Webb.
In the circle,
Brooke Perry took home her first win of the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs. In the eight innings that Perry pitched, three hits and runs were allowed, all while fanning nine batters.
"This team has had to deal with a lot of adversity this year, but they have never quit fighting or persevering," said Head Coach
Tom Cole. "If we had won tonight in 7 innings it would have been a big win, but for us to win in extra innings the way we did is absolutely huge. Glory to God in the highest, in victory and in defeat!"
Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action this Friday as they take on Radford at home. The first pitch is slated for 4:00 PM
