GREENVILLE, S.C. – Gardner-Webb suffered their second loss of the season in an 18-6 match against Furman. spoiling
Talen Francis' career achievement. The team celebrated the 100th career goal scored by Francis in the game against Robert Morris on Sunday.
Furman's 8-0 run to start the match proved to be too much for the Runnin' Bulldogs to overcome.
Jada Preston opened the scoring for Gardner-Webb at the 16:11 mark in the first half.
Talen Francis scored the next goal three minutes later, cutting the Paladin lead to six.
Furman answered back by scoring the next four of the match, but goals by
Lauren Deaver and Francis in the last minute of the first half gave the team momentum heading into the half.
The half started with three more goals for the Paladins. The scoring stretch was stopped by a
Jessica Vetter goal at the 17:50 mark. Furman scored another three goals before the end of the match.
The scoring for both sides ended with
Brittany Sherrod's first career goal with 4:29 left the game.
Between the pipes for the Runnin' Bulldogs was
Kathleen Mackey, making nine saves on the day.
Francis led the team with two goals. Preston, Deaver, Vetter and Sherrod each finished with one.
Deaver had the lone assist of the day for Gardner-Webb.
Mackey led the team with four groundballs. Francis and
Heather Lobas finished with two apiece.
Megan Trout,
Mackenzie Gallery,
Victoria Fischetti, and
Maddie Martin had one.
Lobas finished first on the team with three caused turnovers. Francis, Mackey, Martin, and
Aimie Perino caused one each.
Martin paced the team with eight draw controls, and Francis had five.
Eilish Gately also finished the day with a draw control.
Gardner-Webb will be playing at Stetson for their next game on March 12th with a first draw at noon.
