BUIES CREEK, N.C.- A grand slam by Campbell in the bottom of the first helped lift the Camels to a 7-3 win over Gardner-Webb in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Jim Perry Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (2-5, 1-1 Big South) jumped out to an early lead, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first on a RBI knock to right field by
Keiji Parkhurst in the top of the first inning.
The Camels (5-4, 1-1 Big South) answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame. After loading the bases with one out, Matthew Christian uncorked a grand slam well past the left field wall, setting the score at 4-2.
Campbell padded its lead in the fourth on a two-run home run by Spencer Packard and scored once more in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Arnold.
The Runnin' Bulldogs scored once in the top of the ninth on a RBI knock to center field by
Eric Jones.
Isaac Campbell (0-2) took the loss for GWU, giving up seven runs on four base hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work in the start.
Connor Gleeson tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, scattering two hits while fanning a pair of batters, and
Matt Rivers recorded the last five outs, allowing no runs or hits.
Thomas Harrington (1-1) earned the win for the Camels, allowing two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts in five innings. Reliever Ty Cummings recorded the save, working the final four innings, allowing one run on six base hits with two strikeouts.
Gardner-Webb outhit the Camels in game one, totaling nine base hits.
Mitch McLendon paced the GWU bats, going 3-for-5 while scoring a pair of runs.
Campbell collected six base knocks throughout the contest.
