Softball Takes Home Extra Innings Win Over Charleston Southern in Game One

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb Softball scooped up their fifth overall win of season while splitting the doubleheader against the Buccaneer's of Charleston Southern on Saturday, April 10th

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
  • Sophomore Andrea Lyon led the Runnin' Bulldogs with three RBIs and a homerun on the day.
  • Redshirt Senior Brooke Perry went 3-for-6 at the plate with one double, and accounted for two RBIs in the doubleheader combined.
  • Junior Abbey Goodrum accounted for an RBI homerun in the second game of the doubleheader.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Game One: Gardner-Webb 6, Charleston Southern 3
 
Gardner-Webb was able to hold the Bucaneer's until their at bat in the bottom of the third inning. As Seaenna Stacher hit an RBI Homerun over the right center field fence to open up the scoring for Charleston Southern.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs began to plot their comeback during their following at-bat in the top of the fourth inning. Katie Mitchell singled up the middle to get on base, and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leslie McNeil. Weslyn Almond then struck out for the first out of the inning, which was then followed by double RBI home run from Andrea Lyon that blasted over the left field fence, giving the Dog's a 2-1 lead.
 
In the fifth inning Charleston Southern was able to catch up and take a small lead. As Brooklyn Brewington struck out but still managed to advance to first on a wild pitch, and then stole second base. Ashley Meckley then hit a two RBI homer to left center field, giving the Buccaneer's a 3-2 lead. 
 
Gardner-Webb tied the game up in the sixth inning, as Brooke Perry hit an RBI single allowing Weslyn Almond to score. A scoreless seventh inning on both sides of the ball led to extra innings.
 
During the Runnin' Bulldog's at bat in the eighth inning, Abbey Goodrum hit a single to the shortstop to get on base. Tristen Horrell was the walked, putting Goodrum on second. Almond then hit a sacrifice bunt allowing both runners to advance to second and third. Lyon then hit an RBI single bringing Goodrum home, which was then followed by a big double from Perry, allowing Horrell to cross home plate. Then sealing the win for Gardner-Webb, Lyon took advantage of a wild pitch and trotted home.
 
Brooke Perry took the win in the circle for Gardner-Webb, marking her fourth win of the season. Perry threw for just two innings of action, allowing just one walk and fanning two batters. 
 
Game Two: Charleston Southern 9, Gardner-Webb 1
 
Gardner-Webb's lone hit of game two was a homerun that was hit over the center field fence by Goodrum in the fifth inning.
 
Charleston Southern paced the second game of the twin bill in hits, accounting for a total of eight. Catcher Ashlyn Cribb led by going 3-for-3 at the plate and accounting for a total of four RBI's.
 
In the fifth inning, the Buccaneer's ended the game with a mercy rule over the Runnin' Bulldog's, as they scored five total runs during their at bat in the inning. Ending the game with a final score of 9-1, Charleston Southern.
 
Holly Clark took the win in the circle for Charleston Southern. Clark threw for the full five innings, allowing just one run and three hits, while fanning five batters.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday, April 20th as they take on Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.
