Campbell's Early Second Half Scoring Leads Camels over GWU on Saturday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Campbell's early second-half scoring spurt too much for Gardner-Webb on Senior Day. The final score for the Big South Conference match was 17-11.

The Camels got ahead in the game early as they scored the first three goals of the game in the first six minutes. Campbell's defense proved tough, as they did not allow a Gardner-Webb goal until after 11 minutes into the match. Hailey Maranto put up the first score of the day for the team off a dish from Tori Birks.

After a Campbell goal at the 13:45 mark, the Runnin' Bulldogs scored the next four of the day to take a 5-4 lead. Eilish Gately scored a pair, while Birks and Jada Preston each scored one. All four goals came off assists, each by a different player.

After trading a pair of scores, Campbell scored three-in-a-row to have a 8-6 advantage with 2:35 left in the half. Gardner-Webb's Preston netted one off a Jessica Vetter assist. After a Camels score with 50 seconds remaining, Preston threw a long pass from the sideline to Aimie Perino in front of the cage for a goal with two seconds remaining. The score put the 'Dogs down by one heading into the half.

After a scoreless first eight minutes in the second half, Campbell scored four in a little over three minutes to have their lead swell to five. For the remainder of the half, the Runnin' Bulldogs continued to struggle to find the back of the cage as the team only managed to score three goals across the 30 minutes.

Gardner-Webb made big strides in their ability to convert clears as they had a season-high 23 clears on the afternoon.

Kathleen Mackey made the start between the pipes for the Runnin' Bulldogs making 13 saves on the day, a career-best.

Gately's hat trick led the team in goals scored, and Preston finished with two. Perino, Birks, Maranto, Vetter, Hannah Smith, and Talen Francis each tallied a score.

All eight first-half scores by the 'Dogs came off assists, and one goal in the second half did. The nine assists are tied for the most by Gardner-Webb this season. Preston and Vetter tied for the team lead with two. Perino, Birks, Maranto, and Francis contributed one apiece.

The Runnin' Bulldogs finished with a narrow 16-15 advantage in ground balls. Mackey led the team with three. Heather Lobas, Janice Donaldson, Maddie Martin, and Gately scooped two apiece. Preston, Birks, Vetter, Mackenzie Gallery, and Emily Rowell ended the day with one each.

Gardner-Webb caused five Camels turnovers. Gallery, Smith, Rowell, Vetter, and Martin caused one apiece.

The 'Dogs had 11 draw controls on the afternoon. Martin led the team with five, and Birks had four. Gately and Francis contributed one each.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on April 17 at Longwood with a start scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
