April 20, 2021 | Men's Golf
NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb played it's best tournament of the season at the right time, finishing fourth and advancing to the match play semifinals of the 2021 Big South Men's Golf Championship.
Playing on the same course that saw the GWU women take second last weekend, Gardner-Webb played at a near championship level over 54 holes. In face, the Runnin' Bulldogs were just four strokes back of a three-way tie for the team title by the end of their Tuesday round.
Campbell, Radford and Longwood shot 848 for the tournament, just four shots in front of Gardner-Webb's pace (285-281-286-852).
Gardner-Webb will battle Campbell and Longwood will clash with Radford in the Match Play Semifinals Wednesday. All rounds have been played at the Patriot at Grand Harbor on Lake Greenwood.
Jake Scruggs earned All-Big South Conference honors with a fifth place finish individually, heating up to shoot rounds of 70, 68 and 71 at the Championship. His production on long holes was strong, as he led the field with a 9-under par score on Par 5 holes for the week.
The big move on Tuesday came from Jules Bondil, who led the way with a 70 after shooting one over par on Monday. He was even par on the front nine Tuesday and sank two birdie putts on the back nine – holes 11 and 15 – to pull into a tie for 16th individually by the end of stroke play.
Miles Albright narrowly missed All-Big South honors himself, finishing sixth (70-68-73-211) – just two strokes behind Scruggs. The two were dead even for much of the round.
Jake Kehoe (72-73-72-217) was just a little further back in 23rd and Zack Byers (73-73-73-219) finished 30th for the 'Dogs – who nipped Charleston Southern by one stroke to advance.
Gardner-Webb and Campbell will tee off Wednesday at 8:00 am, with the fifth and final match teeing off at 8:32.
