GWU Takes Loss to High Point in 2021 Season Conference Finale

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point defeated Gardner-Webb 17-4 in the Runnin' Bulldogs Big South finale. The team ends the conference season with a 1-5 record.
 
High Point started the day by scoring the first three goals of the game. Eilish Gately netted the first for the 'Dogs off an assist from Talen Francis at the 18:25 mark in the first half.
 
The Panthers ended the first half on a 10-0 scoring run, extending the lead to 13-1.
 
Hannah Smith tallied the first goal of the second half after an unassisted goal a little over a minute into the period. High Point netted the next four of the game.
 
The game ended with Gardner-Webb goals by Francis and Gabby Zerna, making the final score 17-4.
 
The two teams ended with similar numbers in groundballs, GWU with 19 and High Point with 20. Jessica Vetter and Mackenzie Gallery finished with three. Maddie Martin, Heather Lobas, Grace Briggs, and Janice Donaldson had two apiece. Gately, Smith, Zerna, Aimie Perino, and Emily Rowell scooped one each.
 
Gallery led the team in caused turnovers, forcing two by the Panthers. Vetter, Lobas, and Lauren Connor had one apiece.
 
Martin was first on the team with three draw controls. Vetter and Gately each had two. Francis and Tori Birks finished the day with one apiece.
 
Grace Briggs made her first career start in goal, playing all 60 minutes. She made six saves on 31 shots faced.
 
Gardner-Webb finishes the season on Saturday with a road trip to Rock Hill for a match against Winthrop. The match will count as nonconference and will not go towards their Big South Conference record. In their previous matchup of the season, the Eagles came away with a 17-10 win.
