BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb is set to host Winthrop in a three-game Big South Conference series, with game times adjusted due to potential inclement weather. GWU hosts the Eagles beginning with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm, and will wrap up the series with a single game Sunday at 2:00 pm.
Gardner-Webb (15-16, 14-8 Big South) enters the weekend following a 15-4 win over UNC Asheville on Tuesday night.
Patrick Ferguson paced the GWU bats, which totaled 16 hits, with a 4-for-4 outing, including a double, home run, and four RBI.
Cam Pearcey leads the Runnin' Bulldogs with a .306 batting average and six home runs. Ferguson has driven in a team-high 23 RBI, batting .300 on the year, and leads the team with a .404 on-base percentage.
Mason Miller paces GWU on the mound with a 3.26 ERA, fanning 58 batters in 49.2 innings of work, posting a 3.26 ERA in eight starts with a 3-1 record. He ranks third in the league in opponent batting average (.208), third in strikeouts (58) and sixth in ERA (3.26).
Winthrop (11-16, 8-11 Big South) is coming off of a 13-5 win at Charleston Southern this past Tuesday. Dillon Morton led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 night at the plate, driving in four runs on a double and solo home run.
The Eagles are led at the plate by Ty Hooks, who leads the Big South with a .410 batting average, totaling 32 base hits and 16 RBI thus far. Spencer Yankle leads the team with 19 RBI and 13 extra base hits.
Tyler Jones is Winthrop's top arm, posting a 3.48 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 33.2 innings on the mound, forging a 1-3 record in seven starts. He ranks in the top-ten among Big South pitchers in ERA (3.48) and opponent batting average (.223).
Both teams faced off earlier this season on April 13, with the Runnin' Bulldogs taking a 5-4 walk-off win in the bottom of the 13
th inning on a solo home run by
Ben LaSpaluto.
The weekend begins Friday at 2:00pm with the first game of the doubleheader. The nightcap will begin approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the opening bout, and the series will wrap up Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium. The adjustment to this weekend's schedule also effects next week's midweek bout between the two teams in Rock Hill, S.C. That contest is now scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Winthrop Ballpark.
