Runnin’ Bulldogs Drop Game To USC Upstate, 2-1, On Sunday Afternoon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a down to the wire battle on national television, Gardner-Webb dropped the Matchup late in the seventh inning to USC Upstate, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Gardner-Webb out hit USC Upstate from behind the plate 7 to 5 in today's matchup.
  • Jenna Wacaster led the Runnin' Bulldogs going 2-for-3 against USC Upstate, and teammate Weslyn Almond followed behind going 2-for-4.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
During the Bottom of the sixth inning while USC Upstate was at bat, with two outs on the board, Peyton Darnell singled down the left field line. The next batter for the Spartans, Savannah Grigsby was walked. Then Bre Cooper hit an RBI single to left field, allowing Darnell to score the first run of the game for USC Update. Celeste Delorenzo received the final out for the Spartans as she popped up to second base.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs managed to tie up the game in the top of the seven. Abbey Goodrum stuck out, and the next batter Kate Mitchell hit a single to the shortstop to get on base. Mitchell then reached second on a sacrifice fly that was hit by Leslie McNeil. Batting next in the lineup, Weslyn Almond smacked an RBI double to left center, allowed Mitchell to tie up the game. Andrea Lyon then fouled out to left field for the final out of Gardner-Webb's at bat in the seventh.
 
USC Upstate managed to score off of an RBI Single from Marisa Soterakis, sending Oliva Marshall across home plate to seal the win for the Spartans ending the game in the seventh inning.
 
UP NEXT
 
Gardner-Webb Softball will be back in action tomorrow as they take on USC Upstate in doubleheader action starting at 3:00 PM. Both games will stream on ESPN+.
