CHARLESTON, S.C. – Gardner-Webb opened its weekend series at Charleston Southern on Friday evening with a 3-2 loss to the Buccaneers.
Gardner-Webb took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when
Molly Montgomery and
Meredith Ferguson hit back-to-back homers to left field to take an early 2-0 lead.
The lead was short lived as Charleston Southern scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth.
After the Runnin' Bulldogs had a scoreless top of the fifth, the Bucaneers' SeaEnna Satcher singled to third to advance runners to second and third. On the play, the 'Dogs committed an error, allowing the runner on third to score the eventual game-winner.
The Runnin' Bulldogs were unable to have a hit in the sixth or seventh.
Katie Mitchell was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the seventh.
Leslie McNeil popped up to third, and
Weslyn Almond flew out to left field for the last out of the game.
Meredith Ferguson led the Dogs' with two hits on the day.
Leslie McNeil and
Molly Montgomery each had one hit.
Brooke Perry made the start and pitched a complete game. She allowed two earned runs, struck out eight batters, and allowed six hits.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will conclude the weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first game will begin at noon.
