BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Runnin' Bulldogs are set to close out the 2021 regular season by hosting Radford in a three-game Big South Conference series beginning Thursday afternoon at 5:00 pm at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (26-20, 25-12 Big South) enters the weekend after taking all three contests against UNC Asheville last weekend by scores of 7-6, 8-7, and 11-6 before falling on Tuesday at Winthrop by a 7-6 score.
Eric Jones paces the GWU offense with a .354 batting average, which ranks fifth in the Big South. Jones has totaled 16 extra-base hits, including six home runs, and has driven in 27 runs throughout the season. He' also reached on 15 walks for a team-best .433 on-base percentage.
Patrick Ferguson and
Keiji Parkhurst each have 12 home runs on the year, tied for third in the Big South, to lead the team. Ferguson also leads Gardner-Webb with 44 RBI and a .628 slugging percentage.
On the mound,
Mason Miller continues to lead the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 6-1 record in 12 starts. The right-hander has a 3.32 ERA in 78.2 innings of work, fanning a Big South high 99 batters and keeping opposing batters to a league-low .207 average.
Isaac Campbell has been solid since moving to the bullpen, recording six saves in 17 appearances. The reigning Big South Conference Relief Pitcher of the Week has totaled 32 strikeouts with a 3.23 ERA since March 20.
Radford (22-21, 16-17 Big South) enters the weekend after sweeping Charleston Southern this past weekend by scores of 14-6, 11-3 and 6-3.
David Bryant leads the Highlanders at the plate with a.349 average, along with a team-high seven home runs and 33 RBI.
Greg Duncan is Radford's top arm with a 3.84 ERA in 12 starts, posing a 6-2 record with 57 strikeouts in 72.2 innings tossed. Bruce Hudson is the team's top reliever with a 3.83 ERA in 18 trips from the bullpen, tossing 40.0 innings, while Alex Perkins has recorded six saves on the year in 17 appearances with a 2.86 ERA in 34.2 innings of work.
Both teams have faced off twice this season, both in midweek games. On April 6 in Radford, Va., Gardner-Webb took a 9-7 decision before dropping a 9-6 bout to the Highlanders on May 11 in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The series begins Thursday at 5:00 pm and will wrap up Friday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
