Gardner-Webb Caps Men's Basketball Recruiting Class Friday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb finalized its 2021-2022 men's basketball roster Friday, announcing the addition of graduate transfer Zion Williams from Missouri-Kansas City and Massachusetts State Player of the Year Ademide Badmus from Lynn English (Mass.) HS.

Williams, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound wing, is capable of playing a wide array of positions on the court – from power forward to point guard. He averaged nine 7.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game as a senior in 2020-2021, starting all 22 games for the Kangaroos this past season. He led the team with 30 steals and had a career-high 14 points against Denver in late February.

The Maybrook, N.Y., native averaged 3.5 points per game as a junior and made nine starts in his first year with the program. He spent two seasons at Wallace State (Ala.) Community College, leading his team to a 24-7 record as a sophomore.

Williams starred in basketball, football and lacrosse at St. Mark's High before heading to junior college.

"Zion was a key signee for us," said head coach Tim Craft. "His leadership, experience, toughness and ability to rebound and defend were all things we needed to add to a relatively young roster. He's a great teammate and can do so many things well on the court. Every successful team needs a player with Zion's skillset on the floor. We are very fortunate to have him with us."

Badmus, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound forward, averaged 22.1 points and 13.2 rebounds per game during an abbreviated senior season – leading his Bulldogs to a 7-0 record. A four-year starter, Badmus led his prep teams to a combined 74-7 record with two state championship trophies.

MaxPreps tabbed Badmus as its Massachusetts State Player of the Year for the 2020-2021 campaign.

Badmus was an All-Super Team selection by the Boston Globe as a junior, averaging 18.4 points and 14.3 rebounds per game en route to the 2020 Division I State Championship. He is the third Boston-area standout on the current Gardner-Webb roster, joining Anthony Selden (Roxbury) and Leon Williams (Cambridge).

"Rebounding was an area we needed to address following last season and Ademide provides plenty of size and ability in the paint," said Tim Craft. "He has been a big part of successful teams in his home state, and we are very excited to get him on campus."

Gardner-Webb previously signed the trio of Brendan Mykalcio (New City, N.Y.), Julien Soumaoro (Bronx, N.Y.) and Leon Williams (Cambridge, Mass.) during the April signing period.
