ELON, N.C. – In its first of three exhibition matches, Gardner-Webb Men's Soccer took on the Elon Phoenix at Hunt Field this Sunday Evening. The Runnin' Bulldogs lost to the Phoenix, 4-1, after a 45-minute weather delay.
"It was good to see the squad get out there and play," said Head Coach
Tony Setzer. "The team took a lot of positives from this matchup, and even though it was a loss we played a great opponent tonight."
The Red and Black struck first to take the lead in the 24
th minute, as
Joao Espinheira found the net off of an assist by
Owen Zaldivar.
Less than a minute later Elon managed to score the equalizer, and again in the 43
rd minute. So, the Dogs' went into the break with a score of 2-1.
Gardner-Webb gave up a third goal to finish out the 90 minutes.
Then with 10 extra minutes in the exhibition matchup, The Runnin' Bulldogs conceded in the 98
th minute of play to wrap up play.
Gardner-Webb will play their second exhibition at Greene-Harbison Stadium on Wednesday, August 18
th as they host Milligan University. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 PM.
