BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team faced off against the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Saturday afternoon. The Runnin' Bulldogs fell to the Blazers with a final score of 5-1.
Four different Blazers managed to find the net through the 'Dogs defense during the match. Nicolai Placzek scored twice in the 26
th and 48
th minutes, Brooks Rice found the net in the 35
th minute, Nathaniel St. Louis scored in the 61
st minute, and Willsey League scored in the 66
th minute of match play.
11 minutes before the match concluded,
Joao Espinheira netted the 'Dogs first goal of the game off of an assist from
Pa Njie, making it a 5-1 game.
The Red and Black led the matchup in shots with 13, UAB had just three less.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had seven corner kick opportunities throughout the match, as the Blazers only had five.
GWU paced the matchup in fouls as well with 11 total, and UAB had eight.
Two individuals saw action between the posts tonight for Gardner-Webb,
Mallel Rios logged 51 minutes, and
Mateo Green subbed in for 38. Each of them registered a single save during the game.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, September 25
th, as they open conference play on the road against USC Upstate at 7:00 pm.
