BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took home its first conference shut out win of the season over Big South opponent UNC Asheville. The final score of the match was 2-0, GWU.
"It wasn't the prettiest game but I'm proud of our work ethic and ability to find a way to win tonight," said head coach
Mike Varga. "Both teams played hard and fortunately our defense held the shutout and Maddie played a huge part in the win tonight. We had sparks off the bench tonight when they were needed, and it was a great team win."
Maddie Turlington played a huge roll in tonight's matchup by scoring both goals in the 32
nd and 85
th minute. Turlington's first goal was assisted by
Klara Ovefelt, and her second goal was assisted by
Makenna Stickler.
Three Yellow cards were awarded throughout tonight's match.
Jaasiel Forde and Lead Gossett were carded for the 'Dogs, and Grace Sloan was carded for the Bulldogs.
UNC Asheville paced the matchup in shots with 14, and Gardner-Webb took 12 total.
The Bulldogs had 11 corner kick opportunities, and the Runnin' Bulldogs had five total.
11 fouls were committed by UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb took just one less.
Securing the shutout win for the Red and Black, Goalkeeper
Katelyn Kellogg recorded eight saves throughout the night.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, September 22
nd, as they host the Winthrop University Eagles. Game time is set for 7 pm, and will stream on ESPN+.
