BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took on the Winthrop University at Greene-Harbison Stadium on Wednesday night, dropping the match 2-1 to the Eagles.
"I have to give Winthrop a lot of credit tonight, they never stopped working," said head coach
Mike Varga. "We never found a rhythm. The first goal was exactly how we want to start a match, but in this case it gave us a false sense of security. We stopped doing what got the first goal for us and Winthrop started to outwork us and beat us to the ball. We created a couple chances that would have put the game away at 2-0 but couldn't find the back of the net and then we started to make mistakes that cost us."
The Runnin' Bulldogs struck early on in the matchup, as
Livi Tanzer found the back of the net off of a pass from Ximena Farias, and
Maddie Turlington. This gave the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead nearly 75 minutes of play.
Scoring in the 81
st minute, Anna Kate Highsmith netted the equalizer for the Eagles to tie the game. Then just 7 minutes later, Alex Perez scored the second goal to seal the win for Winthrop.
The Eagles paced the night in shots with 16, the Runnin' Bulldogs took a total of 12. Winthrop led with eight corner kicks, Gardner-Webb had just two. The 'Dogs recorded 16 fouls throughout the match, with the Eagles having half as many.
Katelyn Kellogg spent the full match between the posts for the Red and Black, she recorded 10 saves and only allowed two goals against.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Sunday, September 26
th, as they travel down to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State University. Match time is slated for 1:00 pm.
