Women’s Soccer Clinches 5-0 Shutout Win Over South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team took a quick trip down to Orangeburg, S.C. on Sunday afternoon to face South Carolina State University at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The Runnin' Bulldogs walked away from the competition with a 5-0 shutout victory.

"We definitely needed to see the ball hit the back of the net," said head coach Mike Varga. "Livi got us up early with 2 quality finishes but we left a couple on the field in the first half that we should have put away. SC State never stopped working and our deep roster played a big role in some late goals. It was good to see Klara and Alisha finish with the composure they showed and then Robins goal at the end was the best of the day with her first-time finish. Livi Tanzer opened up the scoring for the Red and Black by netting two back-to-back goals in the 13th and 14th minutes of play. Tanzer was assisted by teammates Klara Ovefelt and Jaasiel Forde."

Three minutes into the second half Klara Ovefelt found the net for the 'Dogs, as she scored off of a touch from teammate Moryah Snype, making it a 3-0 game.

Wrapping up the match, the Runnin' Bulldogs scored two more goals to secure the win. Alisha Holcombe scored in the 75th minute and Robin Jackson scored in the 89th minute off of a pass from Makenna Stickler.

The Red and Black paced the matchup in shots with 25, as South Carolina State took just 3 shots.

Gardner-Webb had a total of five corner kick opportunities, while the Bulldogs had just one.

Spending the full match between the posts, goalkeeper Abby Atchley helped seal the shutout win for GWU, as Atchley allowed zero goals against while recording two saves.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, September 29th as they travel to Virginia to take on Radford. The match is slated to start at 7:00 pm.
