GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team took on Furman University at Stone Stadium on Friday evening, falling to the Paladins 2-1.
"Furman is a very difficult opponent to play and we came up short tonight," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "I give a lot of credit to their players and staff, as the Paladins are a really good team."
No scoring occurred until the 19
th minute of play, as Jake Raine scored with a header for the Paladins.
Gardner-Webb managed to score the equalizer later in the second half of the match, as
Laurits Lillemose scored in the 78
th minute, which was the second header of the night.
Four minutes before the conclusion of the match the Paladins scored the final goal of the match to take the win, as Dylan Lane scored off of a pass from Jake Raine.
The Runnin' Bulldogs paced the Paladins in shots with a total of 18, as Furman had five less.
Mallel Rios spent the full 90 minutes between the posts for the Red and Black, and recorded two saves in the match.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday, September 7
th, as they will host Wofford College for their home opener. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
