Women’s Hoops Charges Past Charleston Southern, 99-62

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team secured its second win of conference play on Wednesday night, as a comfortable lead was held by GWU for a total of 35 minutes while only allowing the lead to change three times in tonight's game.
 
The 'Dogs biggest lead of the night was 37 points late in the fourth period, as a three-pointer by Ki'Ari Cain locked in the 97th point of the game with 2:15 left to play. Micahla Funderburk then went to the line to sink two more buckets to bring the scoring total to 99 points (second-most points scored in a single game this season).
 
Gardner-Webb (4-10, 2-1 Big South) shot 45.1% (37-for-82) from the field, 37.1% (13-for-35) from beyond the arc, and 70.6% (12-for-17) at the free-throw line. The Runnin' Bulldogs offensive front capitalized off of 42 points in the paint, 25 second-chance points, and 51 points off of the bench. 
 
Charleston Southern (1-12, 1-1 Big South) shot 56.8% (25-for-44) in field-goal range, 25.0% (2-for-8) in three-point range, and 45.2% (10-for-22) at the line. The Buccaneers scored 38 points in the paint, 26 bench points, and nine second-chance points. 
 
In tonight's matchup, five 'Dogs scored 10 or more points for the first time this season. Jhessyka Williams led the pack with 24 points (11-16 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-3 FT), followed by Lauren Bevis who put up just 17 points (5-13 3PT, 2-2 FT), Ki'Ari Cain recorded 15 points (6-8 FG, 3-4 3PT), and Alasia Smith notched 12 points (4-6 FG, 0-2 3PT, 4-4 FT) with 10 boards in the matchup (fourth double-double of the season, sixth of career).
 
Freshman Layken Cox had a night for herself on the hardwood, as the Sumter, South Carolina native recorded a career-high 11 points while matching her previous career-highs of six rebounds and two steals in tonight's game. Fellow freshman Shakara Anderson helped GWU's defensive effort tonight by logging a career-high three steals and four rebounds (two offensive, two defensive). 
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, January 8, as they hit the road to face the Radford University Highlanders. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
