BOILING SPRINGS – Fresh off a five-set win on Thursday night, Gardner-Webb claimed its second consecutive Big South win on Saturday afternoon, downing UNC Asheville in straight sets inside Paul Porter Arena, 3-0.
The 3-0 sweep is the first of the 2022 season for the Runnin' Bulldogs. The victory is also the first over Asheville since a 3-2 triumph back in 2017.
Gardner-Webb claimed the first two sets by scores of 25-18 followed by a come-from-behind 25-23 final in game two. During the opening frame, Gardner-Webb fell behind early, but used an 11-2 scoring swing to take control of the set and win the first. In the second, GWU trailed 19-15, but tallied three unanswered points twice to close the gap and take a 23-21 advantage en route to a two-point victory.
In the final set, GWU raced out to an early lead and never looked back, sealing the victory with a 25-13 score capped off by
Mikayla Logan's 13
th kill of the day off a
Morgan Hornaday assist.
Two Runnin' Bulldogs led the team with 13 kills apiece, including Logan and
Delaney McCullough. This performance gave Logan back-to-back outings with double-digit kills, while McCullough hit a career-high .684 for the afternoon. As for Logan, she rounded out the afternoon hitting at a .611 clip.
Kylee Garrison and
Avery Cole each finished with seven kills. On defense,
Kayla Hawkins and
Sophia Kotsovolos had 11 digs, with five different Runnin' Bulldogs adding at least four each. Hornaday also dished out a team-high 27 assists during the afternoon, her third consecutive match with at least 25.
As a team, Gardner-Webb outnumbered UNC Asheville in kills (45-23), service aces (7-4), assists (37-22) and digs (51-37). The Runnin' Bulldogs hit .236 on the night to the Bulldogs' .082 clip.
Looking for its third consecutive win, Gardner-Webb now turns its attention to playing at Winthrop on October 7 inside the Winthrop Coliseum. Opening serve is slated for 6:00 p.m.
