BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb extended its unbeaten streak to four on Wednesday night following a 2-1 victory over Big South Conference opponent Presbyterian.
The Runnin' Bulldogs'
Livi Tanzer put them ahead early in the 17
th minute off an assist by
Autumn Woodard. The Blue Hose's Lindsay Malyszek scored in the final minutes of the first half to level the scoring. The first 45 saw each team shoot more than six times, save two shots, and take three corners.
The Gardner-Webb offense continued to apply pressure in the second half taking 10 shots, putting six on goal. In the 65
th minute, GWU was able to regain the lead following a corner by
Carina Leal that found the head of
Camila Lezcano who redirected the ball into the center of the net.
"Overall, it wasn't the prettiest, but it is always good to get three points in a conference game," said head coach
Mike Varga.
With the win, the Runnin' Bulldogs now have 13 points in the Big South table. The team has a 4-1-1 record and took sole possession of third in the conference tonight.
"Every match is difficult in this conference," said Varga. "Presbyterian is well organized. They are a hard-working team and are much better than their record indicates. They are young and are only going to continue to get better."
Freshman goalkeeper
Chloe Leffler faced 10 shots and posted four saves on the night. Her record improved to 8-2-1 with the victory.
GWU will be back in action on Saturday, October 15 for its final road contest of the regular season at High Point (2-2-1). The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
