HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Gardner-Webb fell to Big South opponent High Point by a final score of 4-0 Saturday night from Vert Stadium.
Â
High Point struck first, scoring the only goal of the first half in the sixth minute. Both defenses would then hold true until the break, but the Panthers ultimately used a second-half surge to seal a 4-0 victory`.
Â
"Tonight wasn't our night, and I'll take the blame for that," said head coach
Mike Varga. "I felt fortunate to go into the half down 1-0, and I thought we came out after halftime and started to change the momentum until the penalty took it away from us."
Â
Maddie Turlington led the Runnin' Bulldogs with four shots. Midfielder
Klara Ovefelt and defender
Alli Varga attempted two shots, while
Carina Leal and
Lea Gossett each took one apiece. Despite placing three shots on goal, the Gardner-Webb offense was unable to find the back of the net.
Â
Following the loss, the Runnin' Bulldogs moved to 9-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the Big South. With 13 points, they are currently tied with their upcoming opponent, Radford, for third in the conference standings.
Â
"I have a ton of trust in this group," said Varga. "We have a week to get ready and play our final two matches at home."
Â
Gardner-Webb is next in action Saturday, October 22, when it welcomes Radford to Boiling Springs. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. from Greene-Harbison Stadium.
