Men's Soccer Suffers First Big South Loss To USC Upstate
October 19, 2022 | Men's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb dropped its first Big South match in a 2-1 battle against USC Upstate Wednesday night from Greene-Harbison Stadium.
The Spartans wasted no time, scoring just 39 seconds into the match off a penalty kick from Felipe Marty. Gardner-Webb responded quickly, however, with Aymane Sordo burying an opportunity from Theo Godard less than two minutes later.
Sordo's goal was good for his fourth on the season and his second in the last three matches as he continues to impress.
The scoring would subside as both teams settled in until USC Upstate connected on a header to regain the lead in the 37th minute.
Both teams totaled 11 shots and each keeper posted four saves as neither side would find the back of the net again.
"Tonight was a matchup of two good teams, and we ended up on the wrong side of the result," said head coach Tony Setzer. "We gave up a penalty-kick goal less than 40 seconds in and countered almost immediately, but we needed to execute better and didn't do that tonight. We will get back to work and improve from this heading into another home game on Saturday."
The Runnin' Bulldogs continue their four-game homestand Saturday October 22 when they host Radford. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. from Greene-Harbison Stadium.
