Gardner-Webb's Ty Anderson Named Big South Football Freshman of the Week

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb linebacker Ty Anderson was named Big South Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon following a career-best day at Marshall.

Anderson (Thomasville, Ga. / Thomasville HS) finished his day with nine total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss (minus-3 yards) and two quarterback hurries, more than doubling his tackling total through the first four games of the season. Anderson also garnered honorable mention FedEx Ground / Stats Perform National Freshman of the Week honors for his efforts.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder delivered a big spark in the first quarter, snagging an interception near midfield and sprinting down the sideline 45 yards for a game-tying touchdown. His active play helped limit Marshall to a 14-7 lead at halftime.

He was part of a defensive effort that forced eight punts by the Thundering Herd.

Anderson now has 17 total tackles this season, his first with the Runnin' Bulldogs after a highly decorated prep career at Thomasville (Ga.) High. He was rated as a three-star prospect and as the nation's No. 24 inside linebacker prospect by RIvals.com and earned Class 2A All-State honors three times with the Bulldogs.

Anderson finished his high school career with 493 total tackles, 60.0 tackles for loss and 26.0 quarterback sacks and was a finalist for Georgia 2A State Player of the Year honors in both 2020 and 2021. As a senior he ranked No. 20 nationally with 196 total tackles (107 solo), which included a 26-tackle effort in the state playoffs vs. FItzgerald (Ga.) High.

Gardner-Webb will open its 2022 Big South Conference slate on Saturday, traveling to battle Robert Morris at Noon in Moon Township, Pa. The game will stream live on ESPN+ and air live on WGNC 1450 AM / 101.1 FM with Dave Friedman and Reginald Walker, Jr.
