
Gardner-Webb Men Use Balanced Effort To Finish Second At Ironwood Collegiate

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb men's golf used a crisp second round to earn a tie for second place at the 2022 Ironwood Collegiate Classic hosted by East Carolina.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had balanced scoring, with all five golfers placing among the top-30 individually and four finishing inside the top-20. The tournament was contested on the 7,120-yard (Par 72) Ironwood Country Club course.
Gardner-Webb finished just one stroke behind team champion East Carolina and wound up in a tie with William & Mary. GWU shot a low round of 286 over the second 18 holes and followed with a solid 289 to finish the tournament. William & Mary pulled even for the tie by shooting its best round of the tournament over the final 18 holes (287).
Maddox Whittington led Gardner-Webb, shooting 70-75-73 (218) to finish in 12th by himself. The trio of Connor Fahey (74-71-76-221), Max White (77-71-73-221) and Peech Bunnadodee (79-69-73-221) all tied for 16th and Mark Chandler (75-79-70-224) came alive over the final round to finish three strokes behind that group in a tie for 30th.
Winthrop's Nick Mayfield won medalist honors, just seven strokes ahead of Whittington.
Gardner-Webb was followed in the team standings by Delaware, Temple, Winthrop, Longwood, Queens, Barton and North Carolina A&T.
Carter Rains played as an individual for Gardner-Webb, shooting a sizzling round of 69 on the second 18 holes and finishing in a tie for 41st.
Gardner-Webb led the tournament with 43 birdies and a pair of eagles by Bunnadodee and Chandler. Bunadodee, Whittington and Fahey each had nine of Gardner-Webb's birdie total.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will play next Monday in Burlington, N.C., as they tee off at the 2022 Elon Phoenix Intercollegiate.
