
Gardner-Webb Competes At Royal Challenge Friday Afternoon

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb returned to the trails at the Royal Challenge on Friday afternoon, October 7, with the women registering a 21st place finish and the men checking in at 25th place from McAlpine Creek Park. The even included a total of 70 different universities and 1200 athletes.
Women's Race
Freshman Jessica Perriello led Gardner-Webb in the 5K race (3.11 miles), finishing with a time of 19:04.8.
Sophomore Amy Prugh checked in at 93rd (19.29.9), followed by freshman Julia Reinboth in 123rd (19:56.4), sophomore Camile Sykes in 193rd (21:07.1) and junior Jennifer Escalera in 212th (21:25.9). Sophomore Brooklyn Tretter registered a 222nd-place finish (21:44.6) with sophomore Teryn Bour rounding out the GWU field right behind at 226th (22:03.6).
A total of 271 runners competed on the women's side, with Milligan taking first overall in the field, followed by Queens and College of Charleston. South Carolina came in fourth, with Anderson finishing out the top five.
Men's Race
On the men's side, sophomore Ryan Morita paced Gardner-Webb in the 8K race as he crossed the line with a time of 27:06.7.
Next came sophomore Ethan Bentley in 205th (29:11.4), followed by a trio of Runnin' Bulldogs finishing within seconds of one another, including junior Joe Waller at 225th (30:37.7), freshman John Marsh at 228th (30:47.5) and sophomore Mark Mellon in 231st (31:01.2). Junior Cole Ray ran a 33:31.1 and came in 243rd, followed by sophomore Garry Ankrom at 247th (34:06.3).
A total of 271 men's runners competed in the Gold Race. Augusta took home the first overall place, followed by Milligan and UNC-Greensboro in second and third, respectively. Concord came in fourth and Florida Southern rounded out the top five.
Next Up
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to the trails next Saturday, October 15 when it heads down the road to Spartanburg, S.C. to compete at USC Upstate.
