Runnin' Bulldogs Fall Late 60-58 Friday Night At Wofford In Mens' Basketball

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Anthony Selden's contested shot in the lane was off the mark at the buzzer Friday night and Wofford survived for a 60-58 win over Gardner-Webb.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (0-4) put together another strong defensive effort, holding the Terriers (2-2) 30 points below their season scoring average and led by as many as 14 points in the second half.

Kareem Reid posted 11 points and 11 rebounds, Julien Soumaoro and Selden also scored 11 and DQ Nicholas had 10 to lead Gardner-Webb. The Runnin' Bulldogs led the game for nearly 33 minutes and were tied for seven more minutes.

Wofford used a 24-7 run to turn the tide, but Gardner-Webb's defense kept the 'Dogs in the game, Wofford's BJ Mack proved to be a tough cover en route to a game-high 26 points in the win.

The two teams engaged in a defensive battle in the first half, with Gardner-Webb suffocating the Terriers into 20 misses in its first 23 shots. The 'Dogs led by as many as eight points in the opening stanza, but Wofford clawed all the way back to tie the game – before GWU closed the game with a quick burst to lead 29-23 at the break.

Gardner-Webb came out of the locker room crisp on the offensive end, and took a 41-27 lead on a Quest Aldridge floater with 15:16 to play.

Wofford slowly chipped away at the lead, however, going on a steady 12-0 run to trim that cushion all the way down to 41-39 with 11:44 to play in the game. Gardner-Webb was scoreless for nearly four minutes during that rally.

An Anthony Selden trey stemmed the tide momentarily, but back-to-back shots by BJ Mack cut the lead to 44-43 with 10:18 left. Mack made two free throws with 9:44 to play to give Wofford its first lead of the night and the Terriers kept feeding their All-SoCon big man.

Mack scored 15 points over a key seven-minute stretch in the second half to lead Wofford's big run.

Gardner-Webb regained the lead despite the run, the final time on a Reid free throw with 2:18 to go for a 55-54 advantage. Two free throws by Jackson Paveletzke put Wofford back in front with 1:06 to play and Mack clanged in a short jump hook with 48.2 seconds left for a 58-55 lead.

Mack made a free throw with 19.1 seconds left to keep the door open, and Soumaoro drained a three with 9.6 seconds left to pull Gardner-Webb back within 59-58.

Gardner-Webb defense limited Wofford to only 16 field goals in the game (16-of-57, 28.1 percent), but the Terriers took advantage at the free throw line, making 25-of-31 chances to stay in the game early – and eventually hold the lead for good. Wofford also took advantage of 17 Gardner-Webb turnovers, converting those miscues into a 15-0 edge in that category.

In addition to Mack, the Terriers got 11 points from Messiah Jones and Paveletzke.

Gardner-Webb will be back in action Saturday afternoon, facing North Carolina A&T in the second game of this weekend's Wofford multi-team event. The game will air live on ESPNCLT.com with Jim "Mojo" Morrison on the call.
