SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb defeated North Carolina A&T 66-64 on Saturday evening after erasing an 18-point deficit with five minutes left to play at Wofford College. The Runnin' Bulldogs
Kareem Reid scored the game-winning basket for the 'Dogs with six seconds left on the clock.
The Aggies took a 6-5 lead early in the first half and went on an 8-0 run shortly after, gaining control of the game early. North Carolina A&T was able to stretch their advantage to as much as 13 points in the opening half. As the period ended,
Ademide Badmus got his first bucket of the game, cutting GWU's deficit to 30-21.
The second half saw A&T start hot and not lose their lead as they tallied 11 unanswered to push their lead to as many as 19 less than four minutes into the half. The teams traded baskets for the next ten minutes until GWU started piecing together a run of their own.
With five minutes left in the half, GWU cut the 62-44 Aggie lead down to a 64-61 deficit. Within two seconds
Ludovic Dufeal converted on a putback dunk followed by
Anthony Selden stealing the inbounds. After forcing a miss, Reid was good on a layup to bring the 'Dogs within one.
Quest Aldridge committed the intentional foul sending A&T's Demetric Horton to the line shooting one-and-one. Horton missed the first and GWU got to the offensive end having Caleb Robinson take the go-ahead shot.
Robinson's attempt went wide, falling into the hands of Reid who made the basket and was fouled on the shot. He cashed in on the free throw and put Gardner-Webb up by two with six seconds to play.
Reid led the team in scoring and rebounds with 16 and 8. Aldridge also finished in double figures with 13 points on 3-7 shooting from deep. Julien Soumaro also poured in a strong game, dishing four assists, scoring nine points, and having three steals.
Today's game wrapped up Gardner-Webb's participation in the Battle of Carolinas at Wofford. The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action next Saturday at North Carolina Central for a road game at 4:00 p.m.
