BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb lost to Campbell 3-1 Wednesday in its regular season finale from Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Jalen James opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a header that got past the Gardner-Webb defense. The Camels buried a penalty kick 13 minutes later to extend the lead to two.
Neither team would find the back of the net again until the closing minutes. Campbell scored its third goal in the 87
th minute and Giampaolo Nardi chipped one over the keeper with two minutes remaining for the Runnin' Bulldogs' lone goal of the match.
Freshman August Guinle was credited with the assist on Nardi's score.
"It was tough to lose that one," said head coach
Tony Setzer. "I thought we created some good opportunities, but unfortunately we were unable to capitalize."
The Gardner-Webb offense applied pressure, attempting 17 shots, but Campbell denied the Runnin' Bulldogs multiple quality looks.
With the win, the Camels claimed the regular season Big South title.
Gardner-Webb will await results from other games in the conference to determine its postseason future. The Big South office will be announcing the tournament participants and seedings Wednesday night.
