Alasia Smith Named Big South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE – Gardner-Webb junior Alasia Smith was named Big South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday following a terrific two games for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Smith (Johnson City, Tenn. / Science Hill HS) recorded two double-doubles to help Gardner-Webb (3-1) to a pair of wins – which pushed the team's win streak to three games.
For the week, Smith averaged 15.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 2.5 blocked shots per game in wins over Furman and Georgia Southern. She shot a crisp 52.2 percent from the floor in the process.
She scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in just 23 minutes at Furman to help the Runnin' Bulldogs cruise to a 90-57 win in Greenville, S.C. She knocked down 6-of-10 shots from the floor and had seven of her rebounds on the offensive end. Smith also had five steals and blocked three shots in that game.
Smith followed that effort by scoring 17 points to go with 12 rebounds in a comeback win over Georgia Southern on Saturday. She made 6-of-13 shots from the floor, 5-of-7 free throws and pulled down four more offensive rebounds. Smith added four steals in and a pair of blocked shots in the win.
Gardner-Webb leads the Big South Conference in scoring (77.2 ppg) and has three of the league's top five scorers in Jhessyka Williams (16.8 ppg), Lauren Bevis (15.5 ppg) and Smith (15.0 ppg) through four games.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting College of Charleston at 3:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena. The game will stream live on ESPN+ and air on ESPNCLT.com (radio).
