HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Gardner-Webb 3, Youngstown State 2 (8 Innings)
The Runnin' Bulldogs struck early in their first at-bat, as
Abbey Goodrum hit a double, which then led to the first score of the game. Goodrum was able to cross home plate, as teammate
Sydney Gilbert reached on a fielding error by the Penguin's left fielder.
In the third inning, Youngstown State took the lead with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, allowing their runner to score. Then after two scoreless innings, the Penguins lurched in front by taking advantage of a GWU wild pitch.
In the bottom of the seventh Inning, the 'Dogs tied it all up thanks to a throwing error by the Penguins second baseman, where
Riley McCurry came home to make it a 2-2 ballgame.
Going into extra innings,
Andrea Lyon retired all three of YSU's batters in order. Then at the following at-bat Lyon turned around and singled, allowing
Araceli Pesqueira to round the bases and lock in the 'Dogs first home victory of the season.
Game Two: Gardner-Webb 6, Rhode Island 5 (8 Innings)
In an exciting end to the day, Gardner-Webb scored two runs in the eighth inning to secure its second win.
Kayleigh Nicholson singled, allowing Lyon to advance to third. McCurry then stepped up to the plate, hitting a single into play which allowed Lyon to score.
Asheton Queen then entered as a pinch-runner, who shortly crossed home due to a single from
Reah Barger to seal the win.
COACH QUOTABLE
"I am really proud of our team," said head coach
Bailey Wigness. "Our pitching and defense was solid. We made the plays when we needed to and we never let the moment get too big. This team really has no quit. They believed in each other and really played together as a family, things we have talked about the entire year. We trusted our preparation and got the hits when we needed them. It was incredible to see and be a part of. SKO DAWGS!"
