BOILING SPRINGS –
Lance Terry and
D'Maurian Williams both eclipsed 20 points, and Gardner-Webb (15-10, 9-3) used a second-half surge to pull away from Charleston Southern (5-20, 1-11) and notch its sixth-straight victory on Saturday afternoon inside Paul Porter Arena, 82-65.
Terry poured in a season-high 24 points and canned a career-high six triples for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who have now won six consecutive games, their longest winning streak of the season.
D'Maurian Williams also added another five 3-pointers for the 'Dogs and recorded his sixth 20-plus point performance of his sophomore campaign, finishing with 21 points and a game-high six assists.
Gardner-Webb shot a blistering 51.9-percent (28 of 54) from the field and 45.2-percent (14 of 31) from beyond the arc while shooting a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line. The 14 made 3-pointers are the second-most by GWU this season and the most against a Division I opponent.
Gardner-Webb's two imposing big men came up big protecting the rim as
Kareem Reid and
Ludovic Dufeal combined for six of GWU's seven blocks on the night. Reid also added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Dufeal tallied four points and team-highs with eight rebounds and three steals.
Anthony Selden checked in as the first player off the bench and rounded out the afternoon with nine points and five rebounds, and
Jordan Sears dished out five assists to accompany seven points and two steals.
In a fast-paced back-and-forth first half, Gardner-Webb jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead, but Charleston Southern quickly rebounded by storming back to take its largest lead of the game (4), 21-17.
Lance Terry immediately knocked down a triple on the next possession, and followed up a Reid jam with a thunderous alley-oop on a pass from
Zion Williams, helping the Runnin' Bulldogs regain the lead and control of the game while ultimately taking a three-point lead into the half, 41-38.
The Buccaneers were unable to keep pace on the opposite side of the break, however, as Gardner-Webb clamped down on defense and began to slowly pulled away. A Terry 3-pointer gave GWU a double-digit lead for the first time, 60-49 at the 12:21 mark, and he followed up two minutes later with back-to-back hits from downtown, as the 'Dogs raced ahead by as many as 20 points during a final frame in which they outscored the Bucs by 14 en route to victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs held Charleston Southern to 40-percent (22 of 55) from the field after the Bucs opened the game shooting 45.2-percent (14 of 31) in the first half. CSU finished the game with nine 3-pointers – four in the first and five in the second – as they hoisted 22 attempts from distance while trying to keep pace with GWU.
Gardner-Webb will now look ahead to one of its toughest conference tests of the year, a midweek home showdown against Winthrop on Wednesday, February 16. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. inside Paul Porter Arena as the Runnin' Bulldogs look to earn a win in front of the Boiling Springs crowd dressed in white in honor of Wednesday night's "White Out."
