Gardner-Webb Rally Falls Just Short In 4-3 Opening Day Loss To NJIT Friday

BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb rallied with a run in the ninth and had a runner in scoring position with two outs, but fell to NJIT by a 4-3 score in Friday's 2022 lid lifter.

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, Gardner-Webb (0-1) got a leadoff single from Benino Mendella – who moved to second quickly on a wild pitch. He advanced to third after a ground ball, then scored on Jacob Marcos' RBI groundout.

Leadoff man Alex Ray reached and moved all the way to second base on a throwing error by the Highlanders (1-0), but a ground ball ended the game.

Ray cut the NJIT lead to 4-2 with an RBI single in the seventh.

• Bo Rusher III led a seven-hit offensive effort, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Marcos also had a pair of hits (2-for-4) and scored two runs for the Diamond 'Dogs.

* Trevor Mattson (1-for-3), Mendella (1-for-2) and Ray (1-for-5) had the other hits for Gardner-Webb.

• Gardner-Webb allowed just four hits in the game, none for extra bases, but was hampered by two   errors, seven walks and three hit batters.

• GWU pitchers did strike out 13 batters in the game.

• Transfer Michael Portella finished the game out of the bullpen, tossing 3.0 scoreless frames and allowing just one hit.

• Drew Janssen took the loss, despite striking out six batters and allowing just one single in 2.1 innings of work. Janssen became the first Belgian to pitch in an NCAA Division I baseball game on Friday.

• Four different NJIT batters had one single each. Catcher Luke Longo drove in two runs.

• The Highlanders' Ryan Fischer hurled 6.0 innings and allowed just three hits, one run and two walks with 12 strikeouts for the mound win. He threw 91 pitches.
