HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Gardner-Webb 9, Morehead State 8 (8 Innings)
During the Runnin' Bulldogs first at bat,
Andrea Lyon smacked a home run over the fence, allowing
Araceli Pesqueira and
Abbey Goodrum to cross home plate and set up an early 3-0 lead over the visiting Eagles.
While the Eagles were at bat in the second inning, they managed to put up five runs to make it a 5-2 ballgame. GWU responded quickly, putting up a combined three runs over the second and third innings. Then Morehead State tied the game with two runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
To capture the win in the seventh for the 'Dogs,
Reah Barger hit an RBI single into play, allowing Goodrum to come home and seal the win.
Game Two: Gardner-Webb 3, ETSU 2
In the nightcap, GWU got off to an early lead in the first inning, scoring two runs to take the lead. In a fairly quick game, ETSU did not put any runs on the board until the sixth, as it was able to score an unearned run on a fielding error. In the seventh, ETSU put a sacrifice fly into play to tie it up 2-2.
Ending the game in nail-biting fashion,
Riley McCurry scored on a passed ball to secure the second win of the day for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
COACH QUOTABLES
"I'm Really proud of our team tonight," said head coach
Bailey Wigness. "Our offense really picked it up and put a lot of pressure on the defense. There was never any panic, we stayed poised through some tough situations. We still have some things we need to improve on defensively but overall, we were scrappy and found ways to win."
