Gardner-Webb Tops UNC Asheville, 80-68

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb faced UNC Asheville for the second time in just three days on Tuesday night inside the friendly confines of Paul Porter Arena. The Runnin' Bulldogs emerged victorious over the visiting Bulldogs, 80-68.
 
Tonight's win is the third consecutive win for head coach Alex Simmons and her Runnin' Bulldog squad, after their previous three-game skid the 'Dogs have beaten their last three opponents by a combined margin of 34 points.
 
Gardner-Webb (10-13, 8-4) shot 49.1% (27-for-55) from the floor, 35.7% (5-for-14) from beyond the arc, and 70.0% (21-for-30) at the charity stripe. In tonight's victory, the 'Dogs capitalized off of 34 points in the paint, 14 second-chance points, and 11 fast break points.
 
UNC Asheville (7-16, 2-10) shot 40.9% (27-for-66) from field-goal range, 35.3% (6-for-17) from three-point range, and 88.9% (8-for-9) at the foul line.
 
All five Gardner-Webb starters scored in double-figures in tonight's game. Alasia Smith led the offensive efforts for GWU with 17 points (6-11 FG, 0-2 3PT, 5-7 FT), 10 rebounds, a pair of steals, and a single block and assist. Ki'Ari Cain put up 16 points (4-14 FG, 1-4 3PT, 7-8 FT), grabbed five rebounds, three assists, and a single steal. Lyrissa Deans followed with 15 points (5-7 FG, 5-8 FT) and 13 rebounds.
 
The reigning Big South Co-Player of the Week, Lauren Bevis recorded 13 points (4-8 Fg, 2-4 3PT, 3-3 FT), four assists, and a single rebound. Jhessyka Williams scored just as many points (6-11 Fg, 0-1 3PT, 1-4 FT), along with 10 rebounds, a pair of steals, and a single block and assist.
 
L'Mia Littlejohn also shot 100% in tonight's contest, as she hit two three-pointers from deep in the second quarter.
 
The trio of Deans, Smith and Williams all locked in double-doubles tonight. For Deans, it marked her first career double-double, while it marked Smith's eighth of the season (11th Career) and Williams' eighth as well (10th of Career).
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, February 9th, as they take a trip down to the Palmetto State to face the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
