DeLand, Fla. – Gardner-Webb had three players score hat tricks in the team's 14-12 win at Stetson. The win moves the Runnin' Bulldogs to 4-3 on the season.
In the first half, the teams traded goals all thirty minutes with the score at 4-4 heading into halftime. Both squads scored twice in each of the opening quarters.
Eilish Gately and
Brittany Sherrod opened the scoring in the second half to give the 'Dogs a two-goal lead. Stetson responded with a 4-1 run to give themselves an 8-7 advantage with three minutes left in the third quarter.
The quarter ended with GWU scoring three unanswered to reclaim the lead. The 'Dogs also had the first goal of the fourth to extend the lead to three, the largest of either team all afternoon. Following this, the Hatters used another 4-1 scoring run to tie the game at 12 with 4:32 left.
Gardner-Webb used a timeout with 3:52 remaining after
Mackenzie Gallery collected her sixth groundball of the day from a Stetson turnover. Coming out of the break,
Talen Francis got a free position opportunity she converted to give Gardner-Webb the lead back for good. Foley sealed the team's fourth win of the year with her goal with 46 seconds left in the game.
Gately led the team in goals and tied her career high with four. Sherrod and Foley each set new career highs with three scores.
Jada Preston added two while Francis and
Lauren Deaver had one apiece. Preston and Deaver also had two assists each on the day.
Gallery set a career high in groundballs with seven which led the team and is tied for the third-most by a player in the Big South this season.
Maddie Martin scooped five, with
Heather Lobas and
Lauren Connor having two each.
Aimie Perino,
Jessica Vetter, and Gately added one each.
In the first half, Stetson secured eight of the ten draw controls, limiting the Runnin' Bulldogs possessions on restarts. The second half saw GWU win 13 of the 20 opportunities, including 11 of the last 14. Each team had 15 on the day. Martin won nine and Francis had six.
Stetson turned the ball over 21 times with 13 being forced by the Runnin' Bulldogs. Lobas led the team with three. Martin and Fischetti caused two each. Perino, Gallery, Gately, Sherrod, and Foley had one apiece.
Danielle Burke started for the 'Dogs in cage and made seven saves on the afternoon.
Gardner-Webb's next match is at Kennesaw State on Saturday, March 26, the last nonconference game of the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
