SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Gardner-Webb bolted to an early 2-0 lead on Sunday at Russell C. King Stadium, but a five-run rally in the seventh resulted in a 7-2 win for Wofford in the series finale.
Gardner-Webb (9-16) wasted no time taking the lead. Leadoff hitter
Jacob Marcos ripped the first pitch of the game down the third base line for a double and scored three pitches later when
Peter Capobianco took a 1-1 pitch up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
An error in the outfield with two outs allowed Capobianco to score for a 2-0 lead and the Runnin' Bulldogs had early momentum.
Wofford (17-8) took advantage of two walks and a bunt single to load the bases quickly in the bottom half of the first, but Gardner-Webb starter
Tyler Switalski limited the damage to only one run – getting a pair of strikeouts to end the threat with his team in front 2-1.
Gardner-Webb held its lead until the sixth, when Nolen Hester led off with a solo home run over the fence in right field to tie the score.
The Terriers took the lead for good with its burst in the seventh inning, taking advantage of two Gardner-Webb errors and four hits to push across five runs – only one of which was earned.
The Runnin' Bulldogs went down in order in the eighth and got singles from
Carson Yates and
Alex Ray in the ninth – but could not make up the deficit.
Kyle Skidmore (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Gardner-Webb in relief, despite only allowing one earned run in 0.2 innings of work. GWU used six pitchers in the game, and only two of the runs allowed all day were earned.
Gardner-Webb had eight hits on Sunday, led by
AJ Jones (2-for-4) and Ray (2-for-3). Marcos (1-for-3), Capobianco (1-for-4),
Curtis Robison (1-for-4) and Yates (1-for-1) also had hits for the 'Dogs.
Wofford reliever Dalton Rhadans (4-1) worked 3.0 scoreless frames for the win, striking out a pair of batters and allowing three hits. Zeb Roos went 2-for-4 to pace the Terriers at the plate.
Gardner-Webb will stay on the road, traveling to face UNC Greensboro on Tuesday. The 'Dogs will return home April 1-3 to host Campbell in a Big South Conference series.
