CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Campbell's Jordan Whitfield went to the free throw line with a chance to tie the game with .8 seconds left, but left his second shot short, as Gardner-Webb (18-12, 11-5) escaped Bojangles' Coliseum with a 54-53 win on Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big South Conference Championship.
The victory advances the Runnin' Bulldogs to the conference semifinals on Saturday where they will meet second-seeded Winthrop at 2 p.m.
Lance Terry scored a team-high 14 points and
D'Maurian Williams added 11 for Gardner-Webb, who combined to shoot 39.7-percent (23-of-58) from the field and 35.0-percent (7-of-20) from distance while holding the Camels (16-13, 8-8) to a 32.0-percent (16-of-50) clip overall and just 18.2-percent (4-of-22) from 3-point range.
Kareem Reid came up big on both ends late en route to an eight-point, eight-rebound performance,
Jordan Sears added seven points, six rebounds and three assists in 32 big minutes off the bench, and
Ludovic Dufeal snatched a game-high 10 rebounds for the second consecutive game for the 'Dogs, who will advance to the semifinals of the Big South tournament for the third time in four years.
Campbell's Jesus Carralero scored the opening bucket of the matchup. Gardner-Webb got their first bucket from
D'Maurian Williams four minutes into the game, and
Anthony Selden knocked down a three pointer a minute later, giving GWU the lead for the first time in the game and never handing it back for the remaining 34:55 of the game.
The remainder of the first half saw Gardner-Webb lead by as many as 11 at the halfway point in the period. The Camels used an 8-0 run in the last five minutes of the period to cut the 'Dogs lead to one heading into the break.
Gardner-Webb was unable to pull away from Campbell during the second half. The match was tied at 47 after a pair of free throws were made by Messiah Thompson with 4:19 left in the game. Reid pulled down an offensive rebound and converted the layup to give GWU back the lead. Sears followed that with a driving layup to make it a 4-point game with 2:40 left.
Zion Williams had the three points for Gardner-Webb on an and-1 with 1:33 remaining to put the 'Dogs up by five. Over the last 90 seconds, three fouls in the last minute gave Whitfield six shots at the stripe. He was only able to convert on four of them, including the potential game-tying shot to end their season.
Gardner-Webb outrebounded Campbell by a 44-29 margin while also dominating the paint to the tune of a 30-14 advantage. The 'Dogs also used an additional 13 second-chance points to cap off the win, their fifth over Campbell in six tries in the program's 14-year history in the Big South.
