WASHINGTON, D.C. – Gardner-Webb dropped a road contest at American on Saturday 20-11. American outscored GWU 8-3 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach for the 'Dogs.
In the first 15, American got an early edge off an Emma Vinall goal, but
Jada Preston tied it a couple of minutes later. The teams traded scored for the remainder of the period. In the second quarter, American score four unanswered in four minutes, stretching their lead to five. The Eagles never allowed the game to tie again after these goals.
GWU had
Lauren Deaver tally the last two goals before halftime. The Runnin' Bulldogs trailed by three at the break.
Coming out of the half, American scored four within the first three minutes to make it a seven-goal game. After American scored their 13
th of the day,
Kathleen Mackey spent the remaining 25 minutes in cage for the 'Dogs and made three saves.
Talen Francis led the team in scoring with three goals and an assist. Preston and Deaver had two each, while Preston also dished an assist for a three-point afternoon.

Mackenzie Gallery led the team in groundballs with four apiece and had two caused turnovers. Francis and Deaver added three GBs each. GWU caused 12 Eagles' turnovers, while they turned it over a total of 23 times.
American's Vinall finished the match with eight goals and an assist for an impressive nine-point day. Kendall Goldblum had four scores and three dishes for a seven-point performance herself.
Team captain,
Maddie Martin received a red card in the second quarter and GWU was unable to settle back into a rhythm from the draw control circle or defensive side of the field.
Lauren Connor and
Reese Jones picked up yellow cards during the match, both happening in the fourth quarter.
