BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Davidson defeated Gardner-Webb 4-3 on Sunday for GWU to fall to 4-5 on the season.
The Wildcats were able to claim the doubles point which proved to be a deciding factor in the match. Davidson got the win in the topflight 6-1, but the 'Dogs
Teodora Ristic and
Maria Jardim had a 6-4 win at #2 to make it go down to the match on #3. Davidson prevailed in the match 7-5, to get their first point of the afternoon.
On court #5 of singles, GWU's
Courtney Fyvie was forced to retire from the match with an injury in the first set, 5-3, giving Davidson their second point of the day. Gardner-Webb had Ristic and Jardim come away with commanding straight-set victories in positions 1 and 3 to tie the overall match at 2.
Davidson's Kavya Patel went to a third set with
Elin Hellberg and won this 6-0 to cap off her victory. Delsol won in flight #2, 6-3, 7-5 to have the match come down to the result on court 6. Davidson's Mira Gladstone did come away with the victory 6-1, 7-6(2) to clinch the match for the Wildcats.
Gardner-Webb's next two matches are against Big South opponents. They travel to Presbyterian (0-0) on Tuesday, March 10, and host Charleston Southern (2-0) on Sunday, March 13. The Runnin' Bulldogs currently sit at 2-0 in conference play and will look to bolster their record with these matchups.
