RADFORD, Va. – Radford scored nine runs in a decisive mid-game stretch and defeated Gardner-Webb 14-3 Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game Big South Conference series.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (11-22, 2-7 Big South) trailed 6-1 heading into the fifth and came to life in that inning. Two-out walks to
Alex Ray and
Peter Capobianco opened the door and
Curtis Robison was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Daegan Brady came through with the big hit, slicing a two-run single into right field to cut the Highlanders' lead to 6-3. Radford, which scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to expand its lead, put the game away in the bottom of the fifth.
The Highlanders used six hits to plate six runs and led 12-3 by the time the dust had cleared. Radford score two more runs in the seventh to close out the series' clinching victory.
The hosts collected 16 hits, going station-to-station for much of the afternoon with 13 singles.
Starter Zach Davidson took a no decision, but was effectively wild on the mound – allowing just two earned runs on one hit with five walks and a hit batter. Foster Seitz (1-0) picked up the win with 3.1 innings in relief, allowing just two hits and no runs.
Bradley Preap led the Highlanders with a 5-for-5 afternoon at the plate, driving in four runs from the cleanup spot in the order.
Gardner-Webb's
Casey Young (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. GWU used five pitchers in the game.
Brady went 2-for-4 with all three RBI to lead Gardner-Webb offensively.
Trevor Mattson (1-for-2) also had a hit and two walks.
Gardner-Webb will host Winthrop in a three-game series next week, beginning on Thursday night at 6:00 pm.
