BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb men's basketball added to its roster on Wednesday, announcing the signing of transfer guard DQ Nicholas to bolster the backcourt for the Runnin' Bulldogs in 2022-2023.
Nicholas (Meadowcreek High / Scotland Prep School) started 56 games in three seasons at Southeast Missouri State, a Redhawks team that competes in the Ohio Valley Conference alongside mid-major powers Murray State and Belmont.
Facing Murray State in the OVC semifinals this past season, he dropped both a season and team-high 20 points while also tying for team-highs with five rebounds and four assists against the Racers, who went on to claim a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament just days later.
"We are thrilled for DQ to join our program and continue his career at Gardner-Webb," said head coach Tim Craft. "His veteran experience on and off the court and proven playmaking and scoring ability will be a tremendous asset for our team next season."
The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder averaged 8.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game as a junior in 2021-2022, finishing in double figures 10 times, including in both rounds of the conference tournament.
One of the most efficient scorers the OVC has to offer, he shot a blistering 48.3-percent from the floor (73-for-151) and 43.8-percent from 3-point range (21-for-48) while finishing fourth on the team in scoring at 22.8 minutes per game.
Nicholas was the only player on the Redhawks to start all 27 games in 2020-2021, ranking fourth on the team in scoring at 8.8 points per game, and second on the team in assists (86), steals (30) and free throws made (79). He hit double figures on 12 occasions and rounded out his second collegiate stint 15th in the OVC in assists (3.2 apg) and 18th in minutes played (29.5 mpg).
Named OVC Co-Freshman of the Week once during his first season, Nicholas ranked second on the team in assists (50) and third in steals (22) as one of five players on the team to average over 24 minutes per tilt. He eclipsed 20 points six times, posting a season-high 24 points against The Citadel and adding two other 21-point performances at Abilene Christian and against Murray State.
Nicholas attended Scotland Prep School in Scotland, Pennsylvania for the 2018-2019 season prior to signing at SEMO. He averaged 12.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 25 minutes per contest and helped lead the Knights to a 36-2 overall record and national championship game appearance as the No. 1 ranked team for most of the season.
Nicholas starred at Meadowcreek in his high school years, lifting his team to its first ever state championship in Georgia's highest classification (GHSA Class 7A) in 2017-2018. He capped the title run with 16 points and eight boards in the state title contest as Meadowcreek upended Norcross, 56-43, ultimately earning a No. 46 ranking in MaxPreps' final national rankings.
