BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb softball team faced Winthrop University on Friday evening at Brinkley Softball Stadium, ultimately dropping both matchups.

Alexa Key led GWU at the plate in game one, going 2-for-2, teammate
Molly Montgomery had a single hit (1-for-2).
The visiting Eagles put up 10 runs over the course of five innings to secure the victory. Reese Basinger (8-9) earned the win in the circle for Winthrop. She pitched five innings, allowing just three hits and two walks.
Andrea Lyon (6-12) took the loss in the circle for GWU, allowing eight hits, six runs, and four walks.
Game Two: Winthrop 4, Gardner-Webb 3 (9 Innings)
The Runnin' Bulldogs fought hard in game two of the evening, as by the time the fifth inning rolled around, they were up 2-0. Winthrop then answered with two runs to equalize the game in the sixth inning.
Going into the ninth inning with a tie game, the Eagles hit a double RBI into play, making it a 4-2 ballgame. GWU tried to counter with a sacrifice fly, allowing
Abbey Goodrum to score with two outs left.
Riley McCurry then struck out swinging for the final out of the evening.
Andrea Lyon (6-13) took the loss in the circle. Throwing for nine innings, she allowed 10 hits, four runs, five walks, while striking out five batters.
