CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb led 2-1 early on Tuesday night but Western Carolina rallied for 10 more runs to beat the Runnin' Bulldogs 11-3 in a non-conference baseball battle.
Gardner-Webb scored two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead, using solo home run from
AJ Jones to tie the score.
Alec Burns walked with one out, then
Daegan Brady sliced a single through the right side to push Burns to third. Burns then scored on a balk to put the 'Dogs on top.
The Catamounts responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good, although Jones drove home
Humberto Torres with an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning to trim the Catamounts lead back to 4-3.
Western Carolina scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and three runs in both the sixth and eighth innings to pull away.
Gardner-Webb had six hits in the game, led by Jones' 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
Jacob Marcos (1-for-4), Burns (1-for-2), Brady (1-for-3) and Torres (1-for-3) also had hits on Tuesday.
Luke Osteen took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. He was one of five Gardner-Webb pitchers to see action. Freshman
Jason L'Etoile tossed a scoreless inning in relief in the seventh.
Western Carolina had 11 players combine for 15 hits in the game and hit a pair of home runs.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action on Wednesday night, hosting USC Upstate at 6:00 pm in a non-conference game. The meeting will stream live on ESPN+.
