April 21, 2022 | Men's Golf
NINETY SIX, S.C. – Gardner-Webb finished the first two rounds of the 2022 Big South Conference Men's Golf Championship on Thursday in third place, just nine strokes out of the lead.
The tournament was bumped to a 36-hole marathon after heavy rains soaked the course over the weekend and on Monday. The event is being played at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor – with a 7,103-yard layout.
The teams will wrap up stroke play with 18 holes on Friday morning, with the top four advancing to Saturday's match play semifinals.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fired a 285 in the opening round Thursday morning and sat in a tie for second at the end of the first 18 holes. A tough start to the second round saw GWU fall back, but a late push lifted the 'Dogs back into the top three.
Senior Zack Byers once again led the charge, shooting a 69 in the first round and par in the second round. The Shelby, N.C., native shot even par on the front nine in the opening round and caught fire after the turn. He sank four birdies over the final nine holes to finish three under par.
Byers had three birdies in the second round to finish with a 72 and in a tie for sixth individually. He enters the final round only four shots out of the lead.
Miles Albright wasn't far behind. He shot two under par in the second round and sits just one shot behind Byers in a tie for 10th – only five shots behind the lead in a tightly packed individual group.
Peech Bunnadodee (74-76-150) and Jules Bondil (70-80-150) are tied for 29th, with Bondil among the tournament leaders over the first 18 holes. Max White lowered his second round score by seven strokes and sits in 42nd with 18 to play.
Gardner-Webb is six strokes behind second-place Charleston Southern and nine strokes behind tournament leader Campbell. Those three schools will tee off in the second pairing of the day on Friday, beginning at 8:50 on the first hole.
