Preston's Late Goal Lifts GWU to First Trip to Big South Tournament Semifinals

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – #5 Gardner-Webb's Danielle Burke made a save on a free-position opportunity as time expired to seal the Runnin' Bulldogs' first win in the Big South Tournament with a 15-14 triumph at #4 Campbell. Jada Preston scored the go-ahead goal with twenty seconds left off an assist by Lauren Deaver to avenge the team's loss from earlier in the season.

Gardner-Webb's Jess Vetter scored the opening goal of the matchup less than a minute into the start rolling to the right of the goal. The two teams were unable to break into the scoring column for the next nine minutes. The Camels did not convert on their first nine shots of the day, including Burke making four saves.

Once Campbell scored their first with 5:47 left in the quarter, the Runnin' Bulldogs rallied off three in a row to take control of the game. Eilish Gately assisted on two of them and scored one during this stretch.

The Camels scored with six seconds left in the quarter and went on to tally the first three of the second quarter. This gave them their first lead of the day with the score now at 5-4. Once they took the lead, GWU's Bria Foley secured the draw control and Ciarra Ashworth buried her chance to tie the game at 5 just fifteen seconds later. The teams traded another pair of goals late in the quarter, but Preston tallied her third of the day to give GWU a one-goal lead with four seconds left before the break.

Campbell was able to outscore Gardner-Webb 4-2 coming out of the break. This included scoring three unanswered to get a 10-8 lead with 3:58 left in the period.

At the start of the fourth, the Runnin' Bulldogs tallied another four, to erase the deficit and claim a three-goal lead. During the stretch, Aimie Perino registered a hat trick and Preston scored her fourth of the day, 50th of the season. The Camels ended the GWU scoring streak with Julianna Sanchez' third of the day with just under eight minutes left in the game. Foley scored after collecting the rebound from a save off her missed shot.

The Camels were able to rattle off three unanswered to tie the game with 89 seconds left in the first-round game. Foley secured her fourth draw control of the day leading to the team calling the timeout. After an initial high shot on the possession, Deaver found Preston on the doorstep and put it away to give GWU the lead with twenty seconds to go.

Campbell won the following draw and called a timeout themselves to set up the following possession. Joslin Hanbury was fouled with a few ticks on the clock twice. The game came down to her free position shot with .2 seconds left in the game with Burke stopping the shot for her 12th save.

Preston led the team in scoring with five with Perino next at three. Gately and Vetter came in next each with two. Ashworth, Foley, and Brittany Sherrod added one apiece. Preston, Gately, and Deaver each finished the game with three assists, and Foley and Vetter had one apiece.
